Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor as well as Jan O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. Models appeared in commercials for a time before relocating into Los Angeles. Her first job was model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She was the star of her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She has also guest starred and appeared on independent movies as well as television series. Donna Abandando is her first part as a main role in ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall blonde secretary of the squad was in the series from 1993 until 1996. Each of the years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series together with the ensemble.
